Day 26: Someone/Something that is overlooked

The children of the Southern Water Tribe.  I’m not talking about the little kids in the first two episodes, no, I’m talking about the people Sokka’s and Katara’s age.  They were clearly not the only children that age in the Southern Water Tribe.  This was pointed out to me in a RP and ever since I’ve always wanted some sort of explanation as to why Sokka and Katara are the only people their age.

Surely there would have been other boys around Sokka’s age that had to stay behind when their father’s left.  Clearly not every man was 16+ or below the age of at least 8.  And what about the girls around Katara’s age.  Clearly not all of them would be old enough to be having kids.  I can understand the lack of babies when Aang was freed from the iceberg, the men left two years before, the youngest any child was going to be was about a year and a half.

Sure I can understand life in the Southern Water Tribe might not be so simple, and there are a huge amount of possible things that could happen that could cause an untimely death or disappearance.  But the fact that no one was phased by the lack of children Sokka and Katara’s age.  Like everyone stopped having kids a few years before Sokka was born and a few years after Katara.  Seriously I doubt that happened.  They both had to have friends their age growing up, and honestly why aren’t they somewhat scared by the fact that their gone or completely saddened by the fact. 

There is no way Katara was the only bender her age.  However if the Fire Nation had raided their tribe many times it was possible they snatched up bender childern.  But what about the non-benders.  I want to know, one can not simply over look an age group of children like their unimportant.

So where in the world are those teenagers?
